[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
Well, have you heard about this new trend called admin night, he might say Admin night? What is that? Well, instead of going out for drinks or watching a series, people are staying at home. Can you believe it? Opening the laptops and doing the live administration.
[00:00:30] Speaker B: Yeah. Paying bills, checking bank account, answering emails, planning the week. Very adult, very boring. But also very necessary.
[00:00:42] Speaker A: Exactly, Vicki, when I was thinking about this topic, but really there are people who get together just to do these things. Well, apparently that's the situation. And that's what why today's episode is about money vocabulary. Because English for real life is not just travel or work meetings. It's also rent, bills, money, expenses, and trying not to spend everything by the 10th of the month. Like happens to the majority of us.
[00:01:14] Speaker B: Exactly. Well, welcome to the Trainingland podcast. Short episodes. Real English for busy people like you.
[00:01:23] Speaker A: That's right. And by the way, I'm Johnny and I'm here with Vicky. Vicky, welcome to our podcast. I really enjoy working with you with this. So today we start with an admin night. Vicky, we are going to be one of those crazy ones who get together not to have fun and have drinks, but just to talk about bills and rent and money.
So should we start then our fictional dialogue?
[00:01:49] Speaker B: Sure, sure.
So welcome to my admin night. Coffee, laptop and bad financial decisions.
[00:01:58] Speaker A: Perfect. Well, I brought my laptop and my anxiety about money.
[00:02:04] Speaker B: Same. I was checking my bank account this morning and. Yeah, not great.
[00:02:09] Speaker A: Tell me about it. My rent went up again and my salary stayed exactly the same.
[00:02:16] Speaker B: That's so painful. I earn money, but I spend it so fast.
[00:02:22] Speaker A: Same here, Vicky. I spend too much on eating out and random stuff online.
[00:02:28] Speaker B: Well, I'm trying to save money, but you know, every month there's something. Bills, subscriptions.
[00:02:36] Speaker A: Yeah, and I can't afford holidays right now. I need to be more careful with my budget.
[00:02:41] Speaker B: Same this month. My expenses are crazy.
[00:02:47] Speaker A: Okay, at midnight. Rule number one, no buying anything while we are doing this. Okay, deal.
[00:02:54] Speaker B: Let's check our bills first and then cry a little bit.
[00:03:00] Speaker A: Yeah, I can imagine Mickey, people doing this. Like saying, well, really, are we getting together just to talk about these things?
I would be crying all the time.
So let us see vocabulary explanation a little bit. So let's stop the conversation here and look at the language.
So we're going to take real phrases from the dialogue, translate them and explain the key vocabulary.
So let's start with phrase number one. Vicky, I think I will put this here.
[00:03:43] Speaker B: Well, phrase number one. My rent went up again.
No,
[00:04:21] Speaker A: Get up.
So my rent went up again. Fantastic.
I earn money, but I spend it too fast.
So you can win a competition.
You don't earn a competition, you earn money.
He spent money.
[00:05:26] Speaker B: See, I'm trying to save money.
Save money.
[00:05:46] Speaker A: I can't afford holidays right now.
I can't afford it.
For example, I can't afford a new phone.
[00:06:12] Speaker B: See, my expenses are crazy.
Expenses, Expensive.
[00:06:35] Speaker A: I need to be more careful with my budget.
Budget,
[00:07:07] Speaker B: Yes.
Well, let's continue with a question for the audience.
[00:07:14] Speaker A: No.
[00:07:14] Speaker B: Yeah,
[00:08:47] Speaker A: Admin nights. So let's talk about why admin nights are everywhere right now.
At first it sounds boring, right? Spreadsheets, emails, bank accounts.
[00:08:59] Speaker B: Yeah, but that's exactly the point. People are tired of pretending everything is fine while their to do list keeps growing.
[00:09:10] Speaker A: So let's see the concept about this. Okay, what is the concept of an admin night?
So an admin night is a low key social alternative to go to going out.
So instead of meeting with friends for drinks or dinner, you meet at home, make some tea, coffee, and then you open your laptops.
[00:09:29] Speaker B: Yeah. And you do your live admin together.
No pressure, no fancy plans, just real life.
[00:09:38] Speaker A: Okay, so fantastic.
So you have great, great plans, but only just having something together.
So. Yeah. And what do what, what tasks do people do, Vicky? And one of those nights?
[00:09:53] Speaker B: Well, most admin nights focus on tasks people usually avoid.
[00:09:59] Speaker A: That's right. For example, I don't know, managing finances, checking bank accounts, paying bills, booking appointments.
[00:10:10] Speaker B: And also answering emails, organizing photos, canceling unwanted subscriptions.
La palaura cancel unwanted unwanted subscription.
We should have an admin night together then.
[00:10:36] Speaker A: That's right.
What?
I keep receiving messages everywhere from subscriptions. I never subscribe to that anyway. Well, basically all the things you keep saying, I do it later.
But why does it trend exist?
What does it exist? This one?
[00:10:56] Speaker B: Because you know, doing this task alone creates a lot of anxiety. You open your laptop, see everything you have to do and then you close it again.
[00:11:07] Speaker A: Yeah, that's exactly. So at midnight, try to reduce anxiety and loneliness.
Maybe more the last one than the first one. No, I think people need to get together just for those things. And when you do it with friends, well, you feel less overwhelmed, you feel supported. La palabra overwhelmed.
Okay. Estarves Bordado.
And you also share accountability.
[00:11:35] Speaker B: One key idea is to share accountability.
[00:11:39] Speaker A: Yeah. If everyone is doing admin, you don't feel lazy, you don't feel guilty, you are not scrolling on your phone, you are not being responsible, you're being responsible together.
[00:11:50] Speaker B: Yeah. It's like saying, okay, we are all adults. Now, let's face it together.
The origin of this trend came from social media and TikTok.
[00:12:02] Speaker A: Yeah, this. This trend really exploded in TikTok. This year in 2026, people started posting. Posting videos like Admin night with my friends instead of clubbing.
[00:12:13] Speaker B: Yeah. Some people even call it a new type of book club for productivity.
Book club Eslo Mijmo GE Sir Club de Lectura.
But instead of reading books, you're actually reading bank statements. So that's why the younger generation love it.
[00:12:33] Speaker A: Yeah, younger generation space, high rent and stable jobs, Rising prices.
[00:12:41] Speaker B: Yeah. So money management isn't an option anymore. Admin night makes it social and not stressful.
[00:12:50] Speaker A: And there is no judgment. Right. Everyone is struggling with something, so that benefits. Benefits beyond productivity.
[00:12:58] Speaker B: Yeah. And the goal isn't just finishing the task.
[00:13:03] Speaker A: People also talk, laugh, complain, help each other.
[00:13:07] Speaker B: It creates a sense of accomplishment, closer friendships and honestly, relief a sense of accomplishment.
[00:13:22] Speaker A: So I think this is especially popular in the UK and us. For example, in Spain. I haven't heard about this yet. Maybe you and I, Vicky, are creating now a monster. And after this podcast, everybody starts to do admin nights.
Who knows?
[00:13:39] Speaker B: Who knows?
[00:13:42] Speaker A: But in Spain is different, no?
[00:13:45] Speaker B: Yeah, in Spain, well, we usually socialize to escape problems in the uk. You know, socializing can mean solving problems together.
[00:14:00] Speaker A: Yeah. So different cultures, that same stress.
So how can we finish this about admin nights? What else can we say?
[00:14:09] Speaker B: Well, admin nights are not about being boring.
They're about control, balance, and also mental health.
[00:14:20] Speaker A: And that's why this trend is going viral. Because real life is expensive, busy, and a bit easier with friends.
So you remember the question we asked at the beginning? Tienes un persupuesto mensual?
Do you have a monthly budget?
Budget?
So do you have a monthly budget?
